Is A Flute A Good Woodwind Instrument To Play?
August 31st, 2009 by peter
I want to play a instrument this year and future years to come. I have taken piano lessons but I didn't fully enjoy it. I narrowed my search down to woodwinds and think i might want to play the flute. The oboe is nice too, but im not sure if those are the best to play. I am open to other suggestions. Could you help me find a woodwind instrument that i like?

a flute IS a woodwind, and I have played it for years. It is very hard to become a really good flute player without lots of practice. One good thing is that once you know the flute you can also play the piccolo and the oboe has all the same fingerings.
Oboe is a little harder to play because it is a double reed instrument. If you want to play the oboe i suggest starting with clarinet and then moving to oboe.
I hope I helped.

flutes are amazingly awesome
ok so i may be a little biased but here what i like about them
they are pretty
they are shiny
they make a pretty sound
they are light
they are shiny
basiclly in my opinion they just sound better then any other insturments.
saxes are just loud and annoying (although if you are thinking you might like a jazz band saxes are nice)
and clarinets are squeky…
plus if you learn the flute you can easily learn the piccolo.

Steve R. has no idea what he’s talking about. Of course a flute is a woodwind. Wow. Clearly he has no idea what a woodwind is.
Anyway, I think the flute is a nice choice.
If I were you, though, I’d choose oboe. It’s a difficult instrument to learn and play, but when you do get the hang of it, the sound is like no other. Truly a gorgeous, haunting sound. I adore oboe!
But, flute is always good for nearly any type of band or orchestra, and any occasion. Plus, you won’t have to buy reeds if you decide to go with flute.
I myself am a clarinetist, though, so of course I’d always recommend clarinet.
Good luck, sweetie! I’m sure whatever you pick, you’ll love!

Flutes are pretty neat instruments. You can play for hours and not have to worry about lip damage like us trumpet players
They do, however, take a long time to figure out how to play well, and they are a pretty common instrument, so when you get to a pro or high school level, expect a lot of competition for the first chair.

Steve R is lying. Flute is a woodwind. Flute is pretty, but clarinet is easier, and that’s almost like an oboe, but easier to play. If you really want to play oboe, I suggest starting with clarinet. That way, even if you don’t end up liking woodwinds, you won’t spend so much money on an oboe.

i play flute and i wanna quit because the band teacher makes us practice like crazy!!!! its a fun instrument to play and its quite easy just if someone keeps pushing you and forcing you to practice like everyday then it makes it boring and stuff. but otherwise a great choice :]

well i would say that flute is a good choice. i also think the alto sax is a good choice too only because it is easier to get a sound out of it and to make it sound good. in the end though its your call and if you let someone else pick for you, you may regret it. good luck and just follow your gut!

A flute is a reed-less woodwind. And I played it for three years and it is a wonderful choice. You must devote your after-school life to it. Good luck!
