    you can buy a whole unit that costs around 250(USD) there are many that will multi-track and used a sound card for memory, you would most likely want a mic too, i recommend a Shure 57 and that will cover vocal and live room stuff too,, i can tell you it is a good place to start,, from there it will cost thousands to make better and better recordings,, but such a unit will set you back a few hundred and get you nose wet as it goes :) and you can see much from that window

    Your trusty guitar amp/bass amp, saxophone, whatever, that you probably already own.
    A computer with a recent sound card: anywhere from $300-1500
    A dynamic microphone, like the Audix i5 or the Sennheiser e609: $80-150
    A simple microphone to 1/8in phono jack (to connect to the back of your PC): $20 or so
    A mic stand: $30-70
    A program to record with: Anywhere from free (Audacity) to freakin’ expensive with programs like ProTools.
